Fulfilling Needs
Wrinkles can have a profound impact on self-esteem. As a person ages, the skin undergoes various significant changes. The skin cells divide more slowly, and the inner layer of skin (the dermis) begins to thin and the ability of the skin to repair itself diminishes with age, so wounds are slower to heal. The dermis contains a rigid protein called collagen and elastin that strive to keep the skin firm, supple and resilient. When the skin becomes damaged by mistreatment or with age, the collagen production deteriorates and skin begins to loosen and skin loses its elasticity, it then sags and forms furrows. The collagen can undergo cross-linking, which is primarily reason for old age skin. This cross-linking of collagen is primarily caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays, free radicals and toxins from chemical and the environment. The sweat-and-oil secreting glands atrophy, depriving the skin of their protective water-lipid emulsions and the skin’s ability to remain moisturized diminishes and it becomes dry and scaly.
